Root canal or endodontic treatment is very common dental procedure designed to save an infected tooth from extraction. The aim is to save a tooth in which the nerve or blood supply has become infected as a result of tooth decay, crack, leaking filling or dental trauma. If the tooth is not treated, it can become very painful and damaged to the point where the tooth may be lost.
Root canal therapy involves removing the infected pulp tissue all the way to the bottom of the tooth root, before carefully cleaning, disinfecting and reshaping the root canal. The tooth is then packed with a special material and sealed with a filling until a more permanent restoration such as a crown is placed, especially when a large amount of your natural tooth structure has been lost.
